Credentials

EQ Economics is a specialist economic research firm supporting the planning and decision-making processes of our clients with independent economic analysis, risk assessment and forecasts. The firm was established in 2016 by Australian economist Warren Hogan.

EQ Economics is set up to bring sophisticated economic analysis and forecasting services to the broader community, with a focus on business and mid sized firms that find it hard to access independent credible economic research.

Located in Sydney but serving clients around the world, our focus is on Australia, but we take a global view of the forces shaping our economic and financial future.

Our team has substantial international experience in business, finance and research.

Warren Hogan is the founder, Managing Director and Principal Forecaster at EQ Economics. Warren has been a leading Australian business economist for three decades.

Warren worked in banking and financial markets for 20 years including 11 years at ANZ Banking Corporation, where he held the position of Chief Economist from 2009 until 2016.

Always drawing upon economic fundamentals as the basis for his work, Warren worked for many years as an interest rate strategist, at the coalface of the world’s largest financial markets.

Advising some of the world’s biggest investors, traders and central banks Warren learnt first hand about market structures, competitive dynamics and the role of phycology in driving economic and financial outcomes.

Applying his economic forecasting techniques in the cauldron of global bond and currency markets was not for the faint hearted. The feedback was immediate and clinical, from both colleagues and customers. Forecasts were not opinions or musing, they formed the basis for investment decisions that would be tested immediately. This was no place for a ‘two handed’ economist. It was a fire pit of risk, continuous probability assessment and decision making.

Forecasts were not opinions or musings, they formed the basis for investment decisions that would be tested immediately.

While commercial outcomes are all important, Warren was customer focused. Warren worked with research teams at Westpac, Credit Suisse and ANZ which were highly ranked in industry surveys for both financial market strategic advice, and economic forecasting.

Warren was appointed the Chief Economist of Credit Suisse in Australia and New Zealand less than 10 year after starting his career, and was appointed Chief Economist of ANZ Banking Group before the age of 40.

Warren spent a year as a Principal Advisor to the Australian Federal Treasury in 2017 and worked as an Industry Professor at UTS Business School between 2018 and 2020. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from UTS in 2022 and was named the AFR’s inaugural Forecaster of the Year in February 2024.

Since 2021 Warren has dedicated his time to building EQ Economics to deliver world class economic analysis and forecasting services to Australian business leaders, and anyone else interested in Australia’s economic future.

Warren’s Journey

1990
Warren studied economics during the recession ‘we had to have’. A credit crunch and surging unemployment shaped Warren’s view of the importance of good economic analysis, and by extension, good economic policy, in preventing such calamities.
1995
A graduate role at The NSW Treasury Corporation gave Warren access to the world s leading economic forecasters and provided critical commercial experience as a advisor to the NSW State Government’s debt management operations.
1998
Warren joined Westpac Banking Corporations economics team working under legendary Australian economist Bill Evans. Warren helped take the Westpac team into one of Australia’s leading economic forecasters. But his time at Westpac was not without controversy including the infamous dealing room rate hike cheer with an ABC News camera in the room, not a great look for a commercial bank, but a reflection of the economics team being ahead of the game and correctly forecasting interest rates.
2000
Credit Suisse employed Warren as a bond strategist, supporting the bond and currency operations of CSFB in Australia and New Zealand. He became part of one of the most highly regarded investment bank research teams in global markets with economists and strategists in London, New York and Tokyo. Warren was operating in global markets with some of the best big picture thinkers right and market strategists. It was just the big picture. Ultimately it was the focus on investment strategy and trade ideas that delivered value for clients.
2005
Warren joined ANZ as part of Saul Eslake’s economics team, responsible for providing economic research to the banks Global Markets business. Warren was soon appointed to the role of Head of Global Markets Research, managing all the economics, interest rate, credit, commodity and FX strategy operations in ANZ’s rapidly growing financial markets business. Warren was appointed Chief Economist of ANZ Banking Group in 2009, and built out ANZ Research as the bank expanded across Asia and around the world. Warren oversaw a team of 50 economists and market strategists operating in across the global financial system.
2016
After 20 years in global markets and banking Warren changed directions to expand his experience in economic analysis to the public sector with a one year engagement as a Principal Advisor to the Australian Government Treasury. He worked in the Macroeconomic Group as well as part of the team supporting Australia’s Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB).

EQ Economics was established as a vehicle for Warren to support various organisations with economic, industry and market analysis – his first client was The Australian Office of Financial Management (AOFM), the Australian Government’s debt issuance arm.
2018
Next stop was academia with a two-year stint as an Industry Professor at UTS Business School. Working with academics and students Warren brought his experience in communicating complex ideas and analysis to a broader audience while keeping staff and students engaged with the economy and financial markets in real time. EQ Economics undertook a range of engagements including a major report for the Australian Food and Grocery Council (AFGC) on the pressures bearing down on Australia’s food and grocery manufacturing industry.
2021
Along came a bank – Judo Bank. Some of Australia’s most experienced business bankers imagined a better way to support Australian businesses after decades of working at Australian major banks. EQ Economics was engaged by Judo Bank to provide economic advisory services to Australia’s newest bank, the first bank to be listed on the ASX since Macquarie Bank. Warren has worked with Judo Bank staff since 2021 to offer Australian business a better lending proposition as well as economic analysis and views tailored to their needs.
2025
EQ Economics goes to a broader market to provide accessible professional economic analysis and projections for Australian business.
